The Physical Order of Power #1

'The Physical Order of Power' refers to a study circle between choreographers Sara Gebran (VE/LB), Marie-Louise Stentebjerg (DK) and myself. Once or twice a year we meet over the course of 1-2 weeks to openly discuss the physical manifestations of power - we discuss power in terms of domestic relations, electricity or larger political structures. Each circle ends with an public presentation.

The first study circle took its point of departure in the following statement by author and political activist Arundhati Roy: "I think of globalization like a light which shines brighter and brighter on a few people and the rest are in darkness, wiped out. They simply can't be seen. Once you get used to not seeing something, then, slowly, it's no longer possible to see it." In the middle of a black space we painted a white square 1x1m. We rigged 8 theatre lamps directed at the square and observed how the reflecting light, bouncing and spreading off of the white square, changed our sensation of the space - what became super-exposed and which aspects stayed in darkness, hidden.
